Position Purpose

The Bus Driver Trainer works under limited supervision to ensure bus driver training for Agency drivers and drivers in training. The Bus Driver Trainer assists the Transportation Manager or Designee with ongoing training of drivers and in assessing driver performance.

Essential Job Responsibilities: Performance Indicators

Driving & Safety (85%)

  1. Operates school bus in accordance with state laws and district policies.
  2. Possess or show the ability to obtain an Oregon State Certified Driver Trainer Certificate.
  3. Train prospective drivers as assigned by the Transportation Manager or Designee.
  4. Participate in accident investigation as directed by the Transportation Manager or Designee.
  5. Conduct retraining of employees as directed by the Transportation Manager or Designee.
  6. Assist with department training as directed by the Transportation Manager or Designee.
  7. Maintains confidentiality of privileged information.
  8. Documents all training activities.
  9. Attends all driver tests with trainee.
  10. Evaluates and reports to Transportation Manager or Designee the progress of each trainee. Makes a recommendation to the Transportation Manager or Designee concerning employment of trainee.
  11. Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
  12. Attends work regularly and is punctual.

Maintenance (10%)

  1. Conducts fleet inspections as assigned by the Transportation Manager or Designee.
  2. Maintains all records required in a neat and accurate manner.

Minor Job Responsibilities (5%)

  1. Pick up supplies as needed.
  2. Other duties as requested.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of six years of experience as a school bus driver.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined by the Agency and as required for school bus drivers.
  • Maintains an acceptable attendance record and is not tardy. Training duties may require work hours outside a “typical” shift.
  • Working knowledge of the behaviors and developmental stages of pre-school children, typically gained by working one year or more in a school or preschool setting.
  • Knowledge of safety practices as they relate to pre-school children.
  • Good written and oral communications skills and basic math skills.
  • Ability to maintain schedules while meeting individual needs of children and families.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License and driving record free of any moving violations within the last three years.
  • School Bus Driver's License desirable at time of hire, required for continued employment.
  • Pediatric CPR/First Aid certified at time of hire or achieve certification within 30 day from date of hire.
  • Employment conditional upon results of the following:
    • Enrollment in Child Care Division- Central Background Registry
    • DMV check
    • Drug Screen
    • Bus Driver Physical Examination and Physical Capacity Examination

Physical/Mental Abilities and Processes

  • Physical capability, strength and coordination adequate to drive a 20 and up passenger busses.
  • Ability to visually assess the health and behaviors of children.
  • Intermediate level decisions needed to adhere to safety and scheduling considerations.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50lbs, typically placing children into seats and ability to carry or drag a child in an emergency situation out of the bus to a safe area.
  • Frequent bending at neck, frequent bending at waist and knees and occasional squatting.
  • Occasional climbing to enter and exit bus.
  • Daily sitting, about 85% of driving time.
