Position Purpose

The Early Head Start Mentor/Coach is responsible for providing on-going coaching for home visiting staff.  Supporting effective teaching strategies in the home that lead to positive outcome for children within the context of a collaborative relationship with the parent/caregiver and child.

Essential Job Responsibilities: Performance Indicators

  1. Develops and maintains positive, supportive relationships with home visiting staff for the purpose of supporting staff growth through the mentoring process.
     
  2. Develops and maintains schedules for home visits and observation for the purpose of determining training needs.
     
  3. Utilizes Relationship Based Coaching cycle components for the purpose of assessing needs, engaging in focused observations, and providing reflection and feedback in order to set goals and develop action plans.
     
  4. Utilizes a home visiting observation tool to assess the interactions and relationship between the home visitor and caregiver.
     
  5. Provides constructive feedback and support for the purpose of increasing home visitor confidence and competence. This may include modeling, co-teaching, observing, providing reading materials or other resources as needed.
     
  6. Provides follow up support to staff following any form of training for the purpose of increasing implementation of information and transfer of skill into practice.
     
  7. Gathers and records information about home visitor’s implementation of practices described in goals/action plans for the purpose of summarizing and displaying data.
     
  8. Completes monthly monitoring reports or coaching logs for assigned visits and submits them according to timelines for the purpose of meeting program requirement for tracking and monitoring.
     
  9. Participates in initial and on-going professional development for the purpose of providing effective mentor/coach activities as well as provide expertise on theory and practices that support child development.
     
  10.  Report monthly to the Regional Manager. 
     
  11.  Attend meetings, training and appropriate professional development activities.
     
  12. Other duties as requested.

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Education or related field with additional infant/toddler training.
     
  • Prefer two years’ experience in an infant/toddler setting. Experience in meeting the needs of all children including at risk, special needs and culturally diverse populations.
     
  • Must have experience working with adult learners.
     
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
     
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, internet and e-mail.
     
  • Must have a valid Oregon Driver's License and proof of insurance and must provide own vehicle for home visits.
     
  • Within 30 days of employment must be Pediatric CPR & First Aid certified and have a current Food Handler's Card.
     
  • Health Appraisal Questionnaire is required at hire and will be updated every two years.
     
  • At time of hire must be currently enrolled in Child Care Division-Central Background Registry and must renew every two years.
     
  • Within 60 days of employment, must provide valid proof of enrollment into the Oregon Registry Step’s Program. Application forms will be issued at time of Hire.

  • Frequent significant decision and problem solving abilities.
     
  • Ability to work as a team member collaborating with staff, parents and community resources.
     
  • Ability to apply Early Childhood Development (focus on infant/toddler) theory in daily activities, and adapt to the individual needs of children.
     
  • Ability to respond appropriately to an emergency or a crisis situation.
     
  • Regular driving for home visits sometimes in outlying areas.
     
  • Regular kneeling, stooping, bending, and sitting on the floor to attend to children's needs.
     
  • Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
