Position Purpose

The Network-Computer Support Specialist provides technical assistance and support for all agency networks and computer users. This position is expected to function 50% as a Network Assistant and 50% of the time as a Computer Support Specialist. Position requires flexibility to occasionally work outside of normal work hours to accommodate for network/systems emergencies and updates.


Duties include but are not limited to installing, configuring and maintaining computer systems, servers and communications equipment and ensuring the reliability of the network. Includes installing software and hardware, installing and testing network infrastructure equipment including switches, firewalls, routers, servers, and associated cabling; determining causes of computer/software/network malfunctions through evaluation and testing and resolve via additions, modifications, repair, or external support assistance.

Essential Job Responsibilities – Performance Indicators

Network Assistance (40%)

  1. Assist in the coordination and purchase of software and hardware for personal computers and network. Install and implement purchased systems; evaluate systems and databases in relation to specific user requests; evaluate hardware and software; test products to determine if performance meets stated specifications.
     
  2. Support local area network (LAN), Internet connections. Support applications including Windows (ver Current), ‘Microsoft Office Professional’, and the Head Start Web-based Child and Family Database (WebCAF), Support specialized vertical market applications (educational software) and other programs.
     
  3. Install and maintain network and computer systems including software for both Linux and Microsoft, and hardware. Be able to install and test network infrastructure equipment including switches, routers, firewalls, servers and associated cabling.
     
  4. Prepare system for installation and attachment to LAN/WAN.
     
  5. Determine and diagnose causes of computer/software/network malfunctions through evaluation and testing and resolve via additions, modifications, repair, or external support assistance.
     
  6. Troubleshoot problems relating to IP routing, routing protocols (OSPF) and VLANS.
     
  7. Interpret network or system messaging and symptoms systematically.

Computer User Support and Training (40%)

  1. Assess user skill level and decide appropriate training approach.
     
  2. Provide technical assistance and training, formal and informal of Head Start staff and parents on the use of computers, programs and Internet/E-mail.
     
  3. Provide end user support for computer hardware, software and communication systems problems and or updates.
     
  4. Assist with development and scheduling of new hire technology training.
     
  5. Assist staff with understanding and following technology policies and procedures.

Planning /Research/Documentation/Misc (20%)

  1. Assist with project management (e.g. planning, assigning tasks, scheduling work, coordinating tasks, testing with outside agencies, monitoring work, etc.).
     
  2. Document / Report methods/processes for support software analysis.
     
  3. Assist in research, proposals, bid, and purchase of new computer and network equipment, hardware and software.
     
  4. Research developing technologies, which would benefit Head Start of Lane County.
     
  5. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA or AA with related Certification pertaining to computer information systems/networks.
  • Successful completion of two or more year’s experience supporting enterprise networking, with the ability to configure and troubleshoot servers, routers, firewalls and switches.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including group presentations.
  • One or more years of microcomputer service and repair experience.
  • Access to reliable personal transportation.
  • Current Oregon Driver's License and proof of insurance coverage.
  • Employment contingent upon the results of the following:
    • DMV check
    • Drug Screen
    • Physical Capacity Examination
    • Enrollment in Child Care Division- Central Background Registry
  • Must have scheduling flexibility to perform occasional weekend and/or after hour services.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to make independent decisions, and exercise judgment in analyzing problems and determining correct procedures to be followed.
  • Ability to establish good working relationships and work harmoniously with others.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision
  • Ability to read and follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to prepare reports and documents and to explain them in precise technical terms.
  • Ability to keep current and adapt to changing environments and new technologies.
  • The ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for up to 100 yards.
  • Regular crouching, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling etc. to facilitate various repairs and installation activities.
  • Regular reaching, including over-head to stock & retrieve supplies, equipment, repairs etc.

Position Information

  • 52 weeks per program year
  • Supervised by Info Systems Manager
