SUMMARY:Early Math Learning Group
DESCRIPTION:Next month’s meeting is on February 28th from 9:30-11:00am out in the Whiteaker Community Room.  The Whiteaker Community Room is by the Whiteaker playground on the corner of Jackson St & Clark St. Kerry promises to arrive early to turn on the heat! \nPlease try out some activities related to spatial relationships or shapes between now and our February meeting.  At that meeting\, teachers will have the opportunity to share what they tried in their classrooms and we will start our new topic\, Measurement.  Please read the section on Measurement in the Creative Curriculum Mathematics volume.  You will find it on pages 21-27 (or 757-763 in the 5th ed).\n  \nSummary of January session: \nThis month we talked about Geometry\, specifically Spatial Relationships and Shapes.  Here is the link to the video we watched of a small group activity related to developing understanding of spatial relationships based on the book “Rosie’s Walk” by Pat Hutchins: https://earlymath.erikson.edu/walk-with-rosie-math-game-education-and-classroom-ideas/\nEveryone who attended today received a copy of “Rosie’s Walk” and/or “Going on a Bear Hunt”.  Kerry still has a few copies left of both books so if you were not able to attend today and would like a copy for your classroom\, please let her know.  She will distribute the remaining copies until she runs out.\n\nAs part of our discussion of shapes\, we discussed the importance of helping children define shapes by their attributes and exposing them to many different examples and non examples of shapes.  Here is the video we watched about the Feel for Shapes small group activity focused on shape attributes: https://earlymath.erikson.edu/feel-for-shapes/\n\nTangrams\, like pattern blocks\, are a great way to practice putting shapes together (and taking them apart) to make new shapes.  We didn’t get a chance to watch the video today due to time\, but here are the instructions for making your own tangram puzzle out of a piece of paper: https://earlymath.erikson.edu/tangram-puzzles-make-one-for-your-kids/\n\nQuestions?  Ask Kerry Holmes\, kholmes@hsolc.org
