SUMMARY:Early Ideas of Geometry and Measurement in Children: The Role of Language and Literature in Math Class – Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Early Ideas of Geometry and Measurement in Children: The Role of Language and Literature in Math Class – Part 2\n\nTuesday\, March 9\, 2021 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm\n\n\n\nPresented by Sara Delano Moore\, Ph.D.\, Director of Professional Learning\, ORIGO Education \nSponsored by ORIGO Education \nREGISTER HERE \nGET THE RECORDINGThe recording will be posted after the live session. Closed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nGet a CE Certificate for this edWebinar Learn more \nIn the primary grades\, students are learning about school\, they are learning fundamental mathematics content\, and they are developing written language skills. A particular challenge of work in these early grades is helping students build early mathematics knowledge when they are still learning about school and developing skills with written language and print. Language is an essential part of teaching and learning mathematics; supporting students to develop language skills alongside mathematics is a powerful tool for building student confidence and competence. \nIn this second edWebinar of a two-part series\, Dr. Sara Delano Moore will share resources and strategies for developing the language and concepts of geometry and measurement with children’s literature. We will develop understanding of shapes (both 3D and 2D) and measurement (with standard and non-standard units) with trade books and big books that use high-quality language features as well as strong mathematics. Learn strategies to help students move from everyday language to mathematical language while building understanding of key geometry and measurement concepts. Join Sara to explore strategies and resources for developing conceptual understanding of geometry and measurement through language and literature. \nThis edWebinar will be of interest to teachers and school leaders of the preK through elementary levels. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation. \nEarly Ideas of Addition and Subtraction in Children: The Role of Language and Literature in Math Class – Part 1 \n\nAbout the Presenter \nSara Delano Moore\, Ph.D. serves as Director of Professional Learning and Chair of the Mathematics Advisory Board at ORIGO Education. A fourth-generation educator\, Sara’s work emphasizes the power of deep understanding and multiple representations for learning mathematics. Her interests include building mathematical comprehension and operation sense\, incorporating high-quality literature into mathematics instruction\, and connecting mathematics with engineering design and computational thinking. Sara has served as a classroom teacher of mathematics and science\, a mathematics teacher educator at the University of Kentucky\, Director of the Kentucky Center for Middle School Academic Achievement\, and Director of Mathematics & Science at ETA Hand2Mind. She has authored numerous articles in professional journals and is a co-author of the Mathematize It! series of books. She is also a member of the Visible Learning for Mathematics writing team\, including two volumes of the Teaching Mathematics in the Visible Learning Classroom series. \n\nTo participate in the live edWebinar\, log in with current version of Google Chrome or install the meeting app prior to the edWebinar on your computer\, your Apple device\, or Android device.  If you have a firewall in your location\, you can participate on your mobile device using your cellular data (not your local network). \nThe edWebinar recording will be posted to this page the day after the presentation. Closed captioning will be added to the recording within 2 weeks of the live presentation. \nJoin the Mathematics for Young Learners community to network with educators\, participate in online discussions\, receive invitations to upcoming edWebinars\, and view recordings of previous programs to earn CE certificates.
