Good afternoon, Head Start,
Yesterday morning, we were saddened to learn about the abrupt closure of the Region X Office of Head Start as well as the staff being placed on administrative leave. We have feelings of deep disappointment for those federal staff affected by the decision of the Administration’s DOGE, and anger related to how such a shortsighted decision will put children and families at risk.
The current Presidential Administration made the decision to consolidate the Office of Head Start Federal Regional Offices, streamlining the existing structure into just five distinct regions.
Understanding the structure of the Office of Head Start Regional Offices is key to grasping the support system for Head Start programs nationwide. Previously, the nation was divided into 11 regions, each with its own Regional Office dedicated to assisting Head Start programs within its State. HSOLC, for example, fell under the umbrella of Region 10, serving programs in Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. Within Region 10, Program Specialists played a vital role, acting as liaisons and providing tailored guidance and support to individual programs. These specialists offered expertise in both program development and fiscal operations, ensuring that local Head Start initiatives had the resources and knowledge necessary to thrive.
This decision by the administration is a reduction on administration costs in the Department of Health and Human Services.
What does that mean for HSOLC? It is business as usual. We continue to do the business/work we do for the families of Head Start. The only implications will be in the form of how quickly the response time
is
from the Office of Head Start.

Ayer por la mañana, nos entristeció conocer el cierre abrupto de la Oficina de Head Start de la Región X, así como la baja administrativa del personal. Nuestros sentimientos de profunda decepción por el personal federal afectado por la decisión de la DOGE de la Administración, y la ira relacionada con la forma en que una decisión tan miope pondrá a los niños y las familias en situación de riesgo.
La actual Administración Presidencial tomó la decisión de consolidar las Oficinas Regionales Federales de la Oficina de Head Start, racionalizando la estructura existente en sólo cinco regiones distintas.
Entender la estructura de las Oficinas Regionales de la Oficina de Head Start es clave para comprender el sistema de apoyo a los programas Head Start en todo el país. Anteriormente, la nación estaba dividida en 11 regiones, cada una con su propia Oficina Regional dedicada a asistir a los programas Head Start dentro de su Estado.
