The Joys of Reading Together
A Community Service Project Sponsored by the
Emerald Empire Reading Council
www.LiteracyLane.org
The Families & Books Committee is a group of experienced teachers available to speak to parents of babies and preschoolers about the importance of reading to their children. Children acquainted with books and stories will have more success when entering school.
Our goal is to contact families in parenting classes, those in homeless shelters, preschool agencies, or teen parent groups. Any number is fine, from one parent and child, to many. School age siblings are welcome also, although our main emphasis is preschoolers.
We offer a short program giving positive support and encouragement to parents. Included is lively modeling of reading aloud to children, and an affirming message about parents being their child’s first and most important teacher.
Appropriate free books are given to all children, including older siblings. We have drawings for special prizes. Books are purchased with donations from the Emerald Empire Reading Council and the Emerald Empire Kiwanis.
Committee members: Gayla Clark, Carol Clemens, Janet Marcisz, Alexa Parker
