Flat funding and sequestration equals loss of sites and staff – that was the message heard at the Policy Council meeting last night. Twenty-three parents expressed their displeasure over the decisions that had to be made to have a balanced budget. We heard loud and clear that parents value the relationships they have with their Family Advocate. We all acknowledged this is a loss not only to us, but to our communities too – across the nation as all Head Start’s face similar challenges.

It was the voice of one that turned the tide of anger to understanding. The Council questioned what would happen if they did not approve the proposal and this person, a person who will be personally affected by their decision said “approve the budget or risk losing the whole program. It is not about me, it is about your children and giving them a head start.”

Debra Taylor, Family Advocate showed her professionalism and ability to stay true to the mission. Debra Taylor, as usual, spoke directly to the parents and changed the outcome of the meeting.

There was good news….
~ Main Street fundraising efforts have been great!
~ A parent is starting her co-op at Brattain on Thursday and,
~ A parent is moving into a HUD owned home. This gives her a three bedroom home with a large yard at a reduced rent. She has been on the wait list for three years for this opportunity!

Election for Historian was held – congrats to C. McCormick (LCC). She will join the Executive Council and record the activities of the Council.

Parents were told of the Robin Rose training on April 25th from 5:30-7:30pm – let your parents know too! There will be a planning meeting on April 22 from 4-5 for the HS Fishing Day in May.

Other business included approving hire recommendations, the self-assessment report and improvement plan, the 2013/14 budget/model design, the sequestration plan.

The next meeting will be the second Tuesday of May – May 14 from 6-9 at Whiteaker.
