Teacher (Combo Part-Day)

Position Purpose

Assist and collaborate with the Combination Model Teacher, to provide comprehensive Head Start services to children/families. Provide a successful, safe and supervised educational setting for pre-school children (age 3-5) while they are in the Head Start environment (classroom, outdoor play area, and field trips). For the children on his/her caseload, develop individual goals for children, provide on-going assessment on progress and facilitate transition into kindergarten. Provide in-home instruction as well as classroom experience to parents which will enhance the parents' ability to fill the role of primary nurturer of their child. Maintain on-going contact with families and work with all other components (health, nutrition, family services, mental health, special services, parent education and resource/referral) to integrate services into the family setting. Positions are part-time Am or PM shifts and require early morning and /or late afternoon hours to cover bus routes.  Must meet requirements per Federal Head Start Performance Standards and any local, state and or agency policies and procedures.

Essential Job Responsibilities: Performance Indicators

Home Visits (30%)

  1. Create and maintain respectful partnerships with families.

  2. Drive to family home and deliver health, educational, nutritional and child growth and development information to parents via twice monthly home visits of at least 1.5 hours each.

  3. Coordinate with parents to ensure well-child exams, immunizations, health screenings, and nutrition assessments are complete and necessary follow up occurs.

  4. Complete family partnership agreements, developmental screenings and all other required assessments with families in a timely manner.
    Prepare and distribute follow up containing pertinent information requested by the family in a timely manner.

  5. Assist and support families in locating resources and scheduling appointments with community resources that best meets their needs.

  6. Assist with kindergarten transition of the child and family out of Head Start.

  7. Promote family literacy

  8. Provide support in parent and child activities that encourages developmentally appropriate activities for the pre-school child.

  9. Participate in two Parent/Teacher conferences yearly

Classroom Time (30%)

  1. Supervise and monitor children at all times.

  2. Assist in setting up environment (indoor/outdoor) for the activities of the day.

  3. Use developmentally appropriate practices to facilitate activities with groups and individuals.

  4. Observe and record behaviors of children to assist the teacher in the identification of each child's strengths and areas to grow.

  5. Participate in monthly staffing of children with all staff as appropriate.

  6. Work with and encourage parent and community volunteers.

  7. Integrate all Head Start components into classroom time.

  8. Utilize lesson plans which reflect mandated elements, parental and cultural influences, and promote the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of Head Start children.

  9. Follow a consistent schedule which includes small and large group experiences, choice time, music and movement, large and small motor activities, skill development, three meals, and effective transitions between activities.

  10. Encourage experimentation, exploration, problem solving, cooperation, socialization, and choice making; ask open-ended questions and listen respectfully to the answers.

  11. Provide an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement in the classroom.

  12. Work with special needs staff in the classroom to develop a collaborative approach that benefits all children in the classroom and meets the needs as specified on the IFSP.

  13. Respond to crisis or emergency situations that may occur. Provide first aid or CPR, prevent the spread of blood borne pathogens, and access emergency services as needed.

  14. Sanitize classroom equipment and laundry.

  15. Assist with meal service as needed

Bus Monitor (15%)

  1. Monitor and manage behavior of children.

  2. Secure children in age/weight appropriate restraints.

  3. Communication with families, including mail, sign-off to authorized adults, cell phones etc.

  4. Assist in emergency evacuation

Documentation/Preparation (20%)

  1. Assist Teacher in maintaining accurate written records, including: assessments, IFSP documentation, screening instruments, anecdotal observations, and other required forms.

  2. Provide teacher with information to develop curriculum plans which reflect mandated elements, parental and cultural influences, and promote the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of Head Start children.

  3. Collaborate with Teacher, to establish childrens goals and comprehensive individual plans designed to promote current learning and attend to nutritional, health and social issues.

  4. Maintain accurate written/electronic records related to home visits

Staff Trainings/Meetings & Misc (5%)

  1. Assure/assist in general maintenance and security of facility.

  2. Assist with inventory of equipment and supplies.

  3. Assist with breaks and other classroom needs as requested.

  4. Attend meetings, training's, and appropriate professional development activities.

  5. Monitor and report child abuse.

  6. Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  •  Schedule requirements:

    • AM positions require a start time as early as 6:30 am and an end time of approx 2 pm – on class days.

    • PM positions require a start time of approx  9:30 am and an end time of approx 5 pm – on class day

  • Educational requirements:   Minimum of an Associates Degree (preferably related to ECE or Child/Family Services). If degree is unrelated requires additional  3 qtr credits (30 clock hours), or 2 semester credits (30 clock hours) of Early Childhood Education/Development., or a minimum of 15hrs Head Start approved mandatory teacher training.  Transcripts and /or training records are required prior to interview to validate educational requirements.

  • Pre-school (ages 3-5) classroom assistant/ teaching experience is required, two years is preferred. Experience and knowledge should include the ability to adapt curriculum to meet the needs of all children including at risk, special needs, gifted, and culturally diverse populations as well as family dynamics and adult learning principles.

  • Knowledge of community resources and referral experience assisting families in need of services is highly desirable.

  • Must have flexible schedule to accommodate family needs, may include some evening or weekend hours.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Bilingual English/Spanish skills highly desirable.

  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, internet and e-mail.

  • Must have a valid Oregon Driver's License and proof of insurance and must provide own vehicle for home visits.

  • Within 30 days of employment must be Pediatric CPR & First Aid certified and have a current Food Handler's Card.
    Health Appraisal Questionnaire is required at hire and will be updated annually.

  • At time of hire must be currently enrolled in Child Care Division-Central Background Registry and must renew every two years.

  • Within 60 days of employment, must provide valid proof of enrollment into the Oregon Registry Step’s Program. Application forms will be issued at time of Hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Frequent significant decision and problem solving abilities.

  • Ability to work as a team member collaborating with parents and community resources. =

  • Ability to supervise and monitor children at all times to ensure a safe environment. This includes the physical ability to monitor and move quickly in order to respond to children who are very active and may need restraint or redirection in order to insure their safety or the safety of others.

  • Ability to apply Early Childhood Development (focus on 3-5 year olds) theory in daily activities, and adapt to the individual needs of children.

  • Ability to handle sensitive family situations in a non-threatening and professional manner

  • Ability to set and maintain professional boundaries with families.

  • Must be able to work independently without intensive supervision.

  • Must be able to balance and prioritize work load and have strong time management skills.

  • Ability to respond appropriately to an emergency or a crisis situation.

  • Frequent driving for home visits sometimes in outlying areas.

  • Regular kneeling, bending and sitting on the floor to attend to child's needs.

  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. in classroom setting and assisting children into seats on the bus and the ability to carry or drag a child in an emergency situation out of a bus to a safe area.

  • Occasional climbing to enter and exit a bus and sitting throughout bus routes.

  • Part Year (with layoff weeks) Bargaining Unit/Non Exempt

  • Percentages of job responsibilities may vary depending upon position site needs and locations.

  • Supervised by Regional Manager
