For the past month, the U of O Part Day classes have been studying the wonderful world of insects. Our class has watched caterpillars metamorphose into butterflies and then experienced releasing them outside. We checked out books from the city library to learn more about the different kinds of insects. Teachers brought out an overhead projector and our class played “Guess that Shadow”!

While collecting information on our KWL chart, (what we know, what we want to know, and what we learned), one of the questions we had was “Are spiders insects?” Together, through books and video clips, we discovered that spiders are NOT insects, but spiders eat insects! Spiders are arachnids that have 8 legs and only 2 body parts, while insects have 6 legs and 3 body parts. So we pretended to be insects and wrapped ourselves in ‘silk’ and then got ourselves caught in a spider’s web!
